Physiologic birth includes spontaneous vaginal birth at term with minimal technologic and pharmacologic interventions. Many perinatal interventions currently used decreases physiologic birth.

Using information from evidence based findings found in current professional resources; respond to the following.

· Describe two (2) potential health benefits for the maternal/fetal dyad resulting from physiologic birth care practices.

· Describe how the registered nurse would promote physiologic birth.

· Describe why multidisciplinary collaboration is important when promoting/supporting physiologic birth.

Describe two (2) potential health benefits for the maternal/fetal dyad resulting from physiologic birth care practices.

Response to peer post.

Your assignment :

In responding to your peer post, describe why you think their suggestion for promoting physiologic birth would or would not be successful.  Come up with a question to further the discussion.

Introduction :

Physiologic birth, or normal birth is considered to be birth that occurs naturally and spontaneously. Physical birth is associated with physical health benefits for the mother and baby.

Some of the benefits includes decreased labor time, increased effectiveness of pushing, and decreased newborn complications associated with elective inductions of labor and operative birth. (NWH, 2016). Other benefits of natural labor are the maturity of fetal organs, hormones that clears the fetal lung fluid and provides a natural pain relief for the other. (AWHONN ,2014).

The registered nurse can promote physiologic birth by educating the mother and partner on the advantages of non-pharmacologic measures of childbirth. Some of these measures includes focus and imagery, prayer, breathing techniques, aromatherapy and essential oils, and therapeutic touch and massage. (Pillitteri, 2014). The nurse can also promote physiologic birth by assisting the mother with various positions such as squatting, standing or a gravity assisted position for added comfort. The positions can have a positive effect on the second stage of labor by decreased the time spent in the second stage of labor. (AWHONN, 2016).

Multidisciplinary collaboration is important when supporting physiologic birth because it creates an opportunity for nurses to influence others of the heath care team or facility to acknowledge the value of physiologic birth. Once other workers recognize it, they can obtain the needed information and skills to partake in the concept of physiologic birthing. (AWHONN, 2016). Encouraging the concept on physiologic birth offers the opportunity to improve the quality and safety of care and increases the maternal and family satisfaction in the birthing process.
