Thinking About Punk and American Exceptionalism

The term “American Exceptionalism” expresses nothing less than the character the United States has to be known as a nation with unique democratic ideals and personal liberty, a nation that tries to follow rules accordingly and is tied to strong values that make its society emerge and look for growth and success. When we think about punk the way punk ethos emerged in the 70s, it was nothing less than a way of rebellion to the status quo and society’s rules; it clearly stood against this “exceptionalism” principle.

American Exceptionalism is a clear example of a society that accomplishes its goals and endless achievements by following rules, and basically being exceptional citizens that look for the best in common society. Punk ethos emerged representing the exact opposite, it represented the antithesis of society, it was the voice for the outcasts, embracing to disobey rules and be different.

The fact that America was a country with infinite opportunities for young people and advancement was a possibility for everyone, didn’t stop punk from becoming a dominant form expression in the country; the availability of resources doesn’t necessarily lead to a fully collaborative society, there will always be people that rebel to the rules established and think differently, and the fact that the punk movement rebelled towards this concept doesn’t necessarily drag society back or stops this exceptionalism. While it rebels to this idea it just gives the concept a different perspective of freedom.

While it is very clear that punk started as an example of rebelling against American Exceptionalism, through the years it has adapted to it; not in the sense of following rules and being an exceptional citizen, but in the way that punk has become a musical genre that represents the ideas of people in the streets, which are many times political. American Exceptionalism expresses the liberty and personal freedom this nation stands for, and the evolution of punk has demonstrated these virtues very clearly. Punk has developed a very political aspect that expresses political ideals of freedom, a clear example of the double-standard punk represents in relation to American Exceptionalism is the song American Idiot by Green Day, while it denigrates the nation claiming to don’t want to be an “American idiot” being a “nation controlled by media” it is also demonstrating the ideals of freedom of expression and democratic ideals by which this concept of exceptionalism stands.

This is the main reason for which this music genre has persisted in America for over 30 years, because while it can be considered the antithesis of this concept, rebelling is also just another way to express freedom, it may not be the ideal definition of American Exceptionalism since it doesn’t express the sense of a shared future and the pursuit of happiness, but in other ways it represents the freedom the Constitution of the United States of America represents.

Advice on Outlines

 

  • Plan to start writing your speech as early as you can, your first draft is due Feb 8. Trying to write your draft the day or two before you are assigned to speak will be a miserable experience. The goal of the reflection papers is to get you to think about how the material learned in this class is connected to your life and how you think as a consumer. I don’t want to micromanage the topic you choose to write about as I don’t want to confine your ideas. However, the best grades in this category are papers that are interesting, thought-provoking, and related to real life. SUGGESTIONS for the first reaction paper include:

  1. Observing value in your own life
  2. Your opinions on hedonic and utilitarian in a specific context
  3. Which company has “augmented” value to you and why
  4. Using the concept of perceptual maps to explain a consumption decision (e.g. how you chose a particular car to buy)

Reflections should be around 1 page typed, size 12 Times New Roman, single-spaced, with one-inch margins.

Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria

  1. BRIEFLY (in one paragraph) identify and describe an actual ethical dilemma you have faced (preferably in an organizational setting). Use values language to do so.
  2. Identify the values in conflict, explain how they conflict to create the dilemma, and how they relate to your personal values. (10 points)

  4. Consequentialist – consequences (harms and benefits) for stakeholders and society overall – identify multiple stakeholders and the harms and benefits for each identified option (15 points).  Do the bottom line mental calculation and evaluate impact on society (5 points)
  1. Deontological – duties, rights, obligations, principles, values – which ones apply to your situation? (5 points) Explain what the golden rule would say you should do (5 points) What would Kant’s categorical imperative say? (5 points)  What would Rawls’ veil of ignorance say? (if you don’t think it applies explain why) (5 points)
  2. Virtue Ethics – What were/should have been your motivations and intentions? (5 points) What is the relevant moral community for helping you to determine what a business person of integrity should do in this situation? (5 points) What would the disclosure rule advise? (5 points) Who is your ethical role model or harshest moral critic and what would s/he advise? (5 points)
  3. Cognitive, psychological, and managerial influences on ethical decision you made. Discuss at least four that are most applicable to your situation. State why you chose the ones you did to discuss and why others are less applicable.
